FUNCTIONAL ACADEMIC SKILLS TRAINING (FAST)

Accreditation

American Preparatory Institute (API) is accredited by the Commission on Secondary and Middle Schools of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) to provide basic skills and competency-based high school diploma programs.

General Information

The courses offered under the Basic Skills Education Program (BSEP) and Functional Academic Skills Training (FAST) are designed for students functioning below the ninth grade level in mathematics, reading, or English as measured on an appropriate standardized achievement test (such as the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE)).

Students may also be enrolled if their Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) or English Comprehension Level (ECL) scores are considered inadequate or if they or their commanders or employers feel they would benefit from participating in BSEP or FAST.  Each student's educational goals, standardized test scores, and course diagnostic test scores are analyzed to place the student into the appropriate course or courses.

The primary goal of each course in these programs is to develop or improve those skills necessary for acceptable job performance, career advancement, and success in future training and educational programs, as well as to develop life-coping skills.  The reading courses emphasize the development and improvement of word recognition, comprehension, vocabulary, and study skills necessary for understanding military manuals, pamphlets, and regulations and for functioning within a military community.  Both oral and written communications skills are developed in the English courses.  A review of grammar rules and practice in effective writing can be applied to the completion of evaluations and military communications.  Skills developed in the mathematics courses range from fundamental operations with whole numbers through algebra and informal geometry.  Work with similar figures, the Pythagorean theorem, and trigonometric ratios is also included.  Therefore, information is available to assist military personnel in a wide spectrum of tasks.
